In 1950, the great clarinettist George Lewis, along with the great Elmer Talbert on trumpet, the great Jim Robinson, and ... You know how this speech goes... Anyway, they recorded "The Jam Session." If you want to hear the real New Orleans jazz, give it a spin.
One of the Jam Session tunes was called "Martha," and for about fifty years no one had any idea where it came from. Terrific song, never heard of it. Then in the early 2000s drummer and historian Barry Martyn figured it out: the song was "Maisie," written and recorded in 1923 by Lew Gold. Gold's rendition was awful and his lyrics embarrassing, but a kick-ass tune.
In honour of all the confusion, we title this song Mavis. Or sometimes Margaret. Or Murgatroyd. Even Hermione from time to time, though not so much lately since Ms. Granger has pretty much superseded Ms. Gingold.
lyrics
Believe me, the lyrics are terrible. You don't want to know.

I am very disappointed by the sound of this recording, it is cavernous and confused. I prefer by far the sound of their excellent studio albums. jpmorel
