Willie the Weeper features Patrick Tevlin’s New Orleans Rhythm with special guest Brian Carrick on clarinet beside regulars Patrick Tevlin trumpet, Colin Bray string bass and Roberta Hunt piano. Carrick, Tevlin and Hunt share the vocal duties.
The session was recorded over two days in the studio while Brian Carrick was in Toronto for the “Kid Bastien Forever” festival in February 2007. A native of Newcastle England, Carrick tours regularly in England and Europe. He has been featured with the Preservation Hall Jazz Band, and has recorded with many of the musicians of New Orleans. His playing is influenced by New Orleans clarinet master George Lewis, and in fact he plays one of Lewis’ own clarinets on this session.
Trumpeter Patrick Tevlin, a disciple of New Orleans great Kid Thomas Valentine, leads several groups in Toronto in addition to New Orleans Rhythm. His band The Happy Pals has been resident at Grossman’s Tavern in Toronto since the legendary Kid Bastien founded the group several decades ago. Tevlin tours Europe regularly, and has performed annually at New Orleans’ French Quarter Festival for many years.
Bassist Colin Bray drives the band in the Pops Foster tradition. He has recorded a great deal, including no fewer than seventeen CDs on the Jazz Crusade label alone, and was a founding member of Jeff Healey’s Jazz Wizards.
Roberta Hunt on piano is a veteran of Toronto’s Happy Pals, Magnolia Brass Band, and a wide variety of blues and other groups. She has toured both with the Happy Pals and as a soloist.
The CD’s cover art and design are by Toronto artist Stefan Berg, creator of the “novel in linocut,” Let That Bad Air Out – Buddy Bolden’s Last Parade.
