Blue Moon of Kentucky was first performed by Bill Monroe and his Bluegrass Boys at the Grand Ole Opry, August 25, 1945.
Elvis covered Blue Moon of Kentucky in his early days at Sun Studios in Memphis. He changed the waltz to a stomping 4/4, and annoyed the hell out of Monroe, who was a staunch traditionalist. Monroe stayed angry about it until . . . until the royalty cheques started rolling in. Then somehow it was OK.
We're still scared of Bill though, so we kept it in 3/4.
lyrics
Blue moon of Kentucky keep on shining
Shine on the one that's gone and proved untrue
Blue moon of Kentucky keep on shining
Shine on the one that's gone and left me blue
It was on a moonlight night
The stars were shining bright
And they whispered from on high
Your love has said good-bye
Blue moon of Kentucky keep on shining
Shine on the one that's gone and said good-bye

I am very disappointed by the sound of this recording, it is cavernous and confused. I prefer by far the sound of their excellent studio albums. jpmorel
