about

Kid Thomas Valentine wrote the Algiers Strut around 1946. It soon became one of his most popular tunes, along with the Kid Thomas Boogie Woogie.

Algiers is just across the Mississippi from New Orleans. Thomas moved there from Reserve, LA in his youth, joining other jazz greats like Natty Dominique, Peter Bocage and Red Allen. Thomas formed his Algiers Stompers in 1926 and played for dancers around Algiers, Marrero and Westwego for decades.

Kid Bastien heard Thomas playing a dance at the Westwego Fireman's Hall around 1960. Oh, man, I wish I could have been there!
